Just months after launching its A.I. features, Apple is now adding them to its most budget-friendly iPhone.
On Wednesday, Apple announced the iPhone 16e, priced at $599, showcasing a new A.I. system called Apple Intelligence. This model includes features like notification summaries and writing assistance in English, with plans to support other languages such as Chinese and Portuguese soon.
The iPhone 16e has no home button or Touch ID. Instead, it uses Face ID for security, a technology that’s been on iPhones since 2017.
This new iPhone marks the first upgrade to Apple’s budget line since 2022, taking over from the iPhone SE. These lower-priced models help Apple reach cost-conscious customers who may later buy higher-end devices.
Apple’s launch comes at a pivotal time. iPhone sales have dipped 2 percent since the high of $205.5 billion in 2022. CEO Tim Cook pointed out that availability of Apple Intelligence has been limited to newer models in English-speaking regions. He noted that in areas where A.I. features were available, iPhone sales improved.
