Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services, recently shared insights about Apple’s rebranding of its streaming service from Apple TV+ to just Apple TV. This change has stirred up some confusion, as both the service and the hardware share similar names.
In an interview with The Town podcast, Cue explained that the “+” was used to distinguish paid services with free tiers, like iCloud+ and Apple News+. However, he mentioned that this consistency may not always apply. For instance, Apple Fitness+ and Apple Music don’t have free tiers but still lack the “plus” in their names. This discrepancy raises questions about naming conventions.
Cue addressed the confusion surrounding Apple TV’s identity. He clarified, “Our hardware is called Apple TV 4K for your TV,” while the app is simply named Apple TV. This naming strategy aligns with how it’s referred on third-party devices, which should help reduce any confusion.
The Apple TV streaming service launched in 2019 with just eight original series, including popular titles like The Morning Show and For All Mankind. Although Apple hasn’t publicly shared precise subscriber numbers, Cue hinted that they might have more than 45 million subscribers. He said, “We’re significantly more than that,” indicating steady growth for the service.
Cue acknowledged the challenges that come with producing high-quality content, especially after being out of production for a year and a half. He expressed optimism about the current state of Apple TV’s content, stating, “Our content has never been better.”
According to a 2023 report by the National Association of Broadcasters, the streaming industry continues to grow, with over 80% of U.S. households now subscribed to at least one streaming service. Apple’s competitive position indicates they are successfully capturing market interest, although they face stiff competition from giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Overall, as Apple adapts its branding, it seems focused on clarity and growth in the streaming space. The changes might cause a bit of confusion now, but they reflect a strategy aimed at enhancing user experience amid a bustling streaming landscape.
