Apple TV Drops Paywall: Enjoy Major League Soccer Games for Free!

Apple is shaking things up by removing the paywall for Major League Soccer (MLS) games. Starting next season, every MLS match will be available to all Apple TV subscribers, making it easier for fans to catch the action.

This change means goodbye to the MLS Season Pass, the paid service that previously aired games. The original deal between Apple and MLS, valued at $2.5 billion over ten years, allowed only select games to stream for Apple TV+ users. Now, the updated agreement will open up access to a wider audience.

Apple’s push to make sports more accessible follows their recent acquisition of U.S. broadcasting rights for Formula 1 races. Just like with F1, all these events will be available to every Apple TV subscriber, showing Apple’s commitment to expanding its sports offerings.

As part of their strategy, Apple recently launched a partnership with Chase, allowing Sapphire cardholders to enjoy free access to the service. They are also honing in on live sports, as it is a key area where they sell ads, enhancing their revenue potential.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services, expressed excitement about the new deal, saying, “We’re thrilled to bring MLS to more fans around the world next season on Apple TV.” His enthusiasm reflects a broader trend: making sports, especially soccer, more inclusive for fans everywhere.

As Don Garber, commissioner of MLS, noted: “Bringing every MLS match to Apple TV takes that vision to the next level.” This move is timely, especially with the FIFA World Cup set to take place in North America in 2026, where many MLS stars will shine in the spotlight.

In addition, MLS and Apple are enhancing production quality with a new facility in Stamford, Connecticut. This center is designed to improve the broadcasting experience, featuring advanced technology for graphics and game presentation. IMG’s Stephen Cook referred to it as a “football factory in America,” indicating its potential impact on American soccer.

Bringing every MLS game to Apple TV could attract new fans and create excitement leading up to the World Cup, which is a game-changer for soccer in the U.S.
