APPLETON – The excitement in Appleton changed when the Appleton Area Jaycees announced 2023 would be their last year hosting the Fireworks Celebration. Many community members felt the difference last year.
Ivana Green expressed her disappointment during the 2024 event. “We’ve been here since 6 o’clock, and there’s nothing to enjoy,” she said. Similarly, Christina Tanck wished for the return of vendors and music, hoping for a more festive atmosphere.
Things are looking up, though. On Monday night, the Parks and Recreation Committee decided to revive the event with a new plan. They will partner with Wisconsin Entertainment Group to bring back the celebration.
Dean Gazza, the Parks and Recreation Director, shared some exciting updates. “We are planning to bring in live bands and plenty of children’s entertainment. Of course, we’ll cap off the night with a spectacular fireworks show,” he explained.
Last year was different. The budget and staffing issues meant a smaller, less lively event. Attendees missed out on food trucks, fun activities for kids, and engaging entertainment leading up to the fireworks.
Alderperson Katie Van Zeeland addressed the public’s feelings during the committee meeting. “While many are happy to have the fireworks back, they felt the experience would be better with music and food in the park,” she said. “I’m glad to see those elements returning.”
Gazza reassured everyone that this year’s planning started early. “It may seem a bit early, but we’re already securing bands for the summer and organizing other activities. Our goal is to have everything lined up and ready,” he noted.
With these changes, the Fireworks Celebration is on track to delight the community once more. Together, Appleton will create an event that brings back the joy and excitement everyone has been missing.
