The Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) has opened applications for the 2026 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Organizations can apply until May 1, 2026. This program ensures children aged 18 and under, who rely on school meal programs, continue to receive healthy meals during the summer break.
Every year, TDHS teams up with food sponsors across the state to serve meals from late May through August. In 2025, the SFSP provided over seven million meals to children in Tennessee. TDHS Commissioner Clarence H. Carter highlighted the critical role of community partners in this success, encouraging more organizations to help ensure children have access to nutritious food during summer.
While the SFSP typically operates in many areas, this year, there’s a strong focus on rural counties with few meal sites. These counties include Benton, Carroll, and Cocke, among others. TDHS is actively seeking sponsors to cover these areas, though additional sponsors are welcome throughout Tennessee.
“We’re not just thinking about school-age children. Adults aged 19 and older with disabilities who participated in relevant school programs can also receive free meals,” added Carter.
Parents looking for a Summer Food Service Program site nearby can reach out to TDHS at 615-313-4749 or check with local schools as the school year winds down.
In recent years, food security has become a significant issue in the U.S. According to a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 10.5% of American households experienced food insecurity in 2021. Programs like SFSP play a crucial role in combating this challenge, especially in communities that struggle to provide consistent access to meals.
As communities rally to fight hunger, the Summer Food Service Program represents an essential resource. By joining forces, organizations can create a healthier future for children across Tennessee.
