Ariana Grande is speaking out about the mental health needs of young entertainers. After growing up in the spotlight, she wants music and film companies to provide mental health resources, including weekly therapy sessions, for young talent. She shared her thoughts in a recent podcast with Marc Maron.
Grande, who became famous as a teenager on Nickelodeon’s Victorious and Sam & Cat, emphasized the importance of making mental health support part of contracts for performers. “It’s essential that record labels and studios include this in contracts,” she said. “Having access to a therapist several times a week is crucial for artists.”
She also reflected on her struggles with public scrutiny over her relationships and body image. “At 19, I faced so much pressure, and it was overwhelming,” Grande explained. “I worked hard to make sense of it all, but it was a confusing time.”
Her comments come after Chappell Roan highlighted healthcare issues in the music industry when she won the Best New Artist Grammy. Roan urged record labels to provide fair wages and healthcare to support developing artists. She felt that if her label had prioritized artists’ health, they could have offered her the care she needed while she was pouring her heart into her work.
“Labels should treat their artists like valuable employees,” Roan said. “They need to provide livable wages and health insurance.” Since her Grammy win, she has donated $25,000 to Backline, a nonprofit focused on mental health resources for musicians. Charli XCX and Noah Kahan have also pledged to match her donation.
Grande echoed Roan’s sentiments, stating that labels understand how dramatically a young artist’s life changes and should take steps to protect them. “When artists land life-changing roles or record deals, mental health support should be a guaranteed part of the contract,” she stated. “Being an artist makes you vulnerable, and it’s vital to have support during such transformative times.”
