Arizona Wildcats Baseball Falls to New Mexico
The University of Arizona baseball team faced a tough loss against New Mexico, with a final score of 6-3. This game took place in Tucson.
The Wildcats recorded eight hits along with five walks, while the Lobos managed 11 hits and three walks. Samuel Jackson of New Mexico earned the win, while Arizona’s Collin McKinney took the loss.
Leading the Wildcats at the plate were Caleb Danzeisen and Nate Novitske, each with two hits. Danzeisen also managed to reach base three times, thanks to a walk. Arizona’s pitchers showed promise, striking out 13 batters. Notably, freshman Benton Hickman delivered a stellar performance in relief, pitching three perfect innings.
New Mexico got on the board first, scoring an unearned run in the first inning. However, Arizona quickly responded with three runs in the second. Maddox Mihalakis opened the inning with a double. Roman Meyers followed with a single that brought Mihalakis home. Danzeisen added another single, moving Meyers to second base. After a well-placed sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, Mathis Meurant’s grounder brought Meyers in. A wild pitch later allowed Danzeisen to score, putting Arizona ahead 3-1.
The Lobos, however, came back strong, securing four runs in the third inning to take the lead. They later added another run in the fifth, finalizing the score at 6-3.
Arizona struggled to find the scoreboard for the rest of the game and will be looking to bounce back as they return to Hi Corbett Field on Friday. They will kick off a three-game series against Texas Tech, with the first pitch set for 6:05 p.m.
