Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has come forward to explain the decision to send evidence related to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance to a DNA lab in Florida instead of the FBI’s lab in Quantico. He emphasized that his department has been using the Florida lab for years and prefers to keep evidence processing streamlined, stating that it avoids unnecessary complications.
Nancy Guthrie, a mother and the parent of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her Tucson home about two weeks ago, believed to have been taken in the middle of the night. The investigation has not yet revealed any suspects, despite receiving some DNA results. Nanos confirmed they are reviewing the DNA collected, which includes samples from the Guthrie family and others associated with Nancy.
“We have DNA that’s not from her or those close to her, and we’re working to identify it,” Nanos mentioned. He also noted they have not found any evidence of life or death but reassured the public that they are diligently pursuing leads, and the suspect should be concerned.
A significant development in the case includes the FBI releasing a description of a potential suspect seen on Nancy’s home security camera. The individual is a male, approximately 5’9” to 5’10” tall, dressed in a ski mask and gloves, and carrying a specific black backpack available only at Walmart. The FBI has doubled the reward to $100,000 for credible information about her whereabouts and has also placed her on their list of most wanted missing persons.
Local authorities have called for video footage from residents within a 2-mile radius of Nancy’s home, requesting anything unusual captured from New Year’s Day to February 2nd, the day after she was reported missing. In addition, investigators recently discovered a pair of black gloves, now undergoing DNA testing, believed to be connected to the case. They are focusing efforts in the Catalina Foothills area where Nancy lived.
