Arizona State University (ASU) is expanding its presence in India by partnering with local universities and considering the creation of an innovative “agentic” university in the country, according to President Michael M. Crow.
In a recent interview, Crow revealed that ASU has teamed up with five Indian institutions: Chitkara University, Shiv Nadar University, Anurag University, RV University, and Rajalakshmi Engineering College. This partnership aims to enhance educational opportunities for Indian students.
ASU plans to grow its network, collaborating with up to ten universities. This will allow students in India to access dual-degree programs and advanced digital learning resources. Crow expressed that the goal is to expose high-achieving students to both American and Indian teaching methods through ASU’s digital resources. Many will eventually have the chance to earn a degree at ASU in the U.S.
With the introduction of India’s New Education Policy, Crow mentioned that ASU is exploring the possibility of setting up a cutting-edge, AI-driven university in India. This initiative would utilize the educational technologies developed by ASU over the past 15 years. While ASU hasn’t finalized plans for a full campus yet, the university is committed to creating innovative learning experiences in India.
Currently, ASU hosts around 7,000 Indian students on its U.S. campus, making India its largest international student base. Additionally, there are many more students enrolled in ASU’s affiliated centers in India. Crow noted the importance of providing students in India with access to advanced digital learning tools and innovative teaching methods, ensuring the curriculum meets global academic standards while being relevant to local needs.
Crow emphasized the importance of a flexible education system that blends theoretical knowledge with practical application. He believes that a well-rounded education is essential, as students in the U.S. engage in various subjects, from engineering to arts and politics. This approach ensures they can adapt to changes in society and technology.
Finally, while India has made significant strides in education over the past 75 years, Crow pointed out the need for further improvement in research and innovation. This focus could enhance the educational landscape and provide students with even more opportunities.
