CHANDLER, Ariz. (9/9/25) – The Arkansas State men’s golf team kicked off their season with impressive performance at the Whirlwind Invitational, finishing in second place. They recorded a total of 40-under par, which ranks as the fourth-lowest score in the program’s history.
The team finished strong with consecutive rounds of 11-under par 277, totaling 824 over three rounds. They fell just short of the host team, USC, who claimed the title at 52-under par 812. Notably, UTEP, New Mexico State, Stetson, and James Madison also finished strong, rounding out the top five in the 12-team field.
Individually, Thomas Schmidt and Chris Somerfield led Arkansas State, tying for eighth with a score of 10-under par 206. Somerfield’s standout moment came with a low round of 4-under par 68 on Tuesday, while Schmidt closed with a solid 2-under par 70. Jake Wallis followed closely, tying for 11th at 8-under par 208. Other noteworthy performances included Milan Reed in 16th place at 7-under par 209 and Jake Lile in 18th at 6-under par 210.
Men’s collegiate golf is gaining more recognition, with a surge in interest over the past few years. According to a recent NCAA report, participation in men’s golf increased by 4% since the previous year, indicating a positive trend in youth engagement in the sport.
Next up for Arkansas State is the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on September 19-20 at the University of New Mexico Championship Course. As the season progresses, fans and players alike will be eager to see how the team builds on this strong start.
