Authorities have made an arrest months after a woman was found buried at a Florida fast-food drive-thru. Michael Canty, 54, was charged last week in connection to the murder of Dawn Morrison, 48, which occurred in June 2024. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reported the details.

On June 18, deputies responded to a Church’s Chicken in Tampa after a passerby discovered Morrison’s body partially covered in mulch. The body was in an advanced state of decomposition, and an autopsy revealed she had suffered trauma to her upper body. Although the exact cause of death has not been made public, her death has been classified as a homicide.
Investigators examined several leads, interviewing friends of Morrison, collecting DNA evidence, and analyzing surveillance footage. Their investigation pointed to Canty as a suspect. The video captured him and Morrison walking towards a dumpster near a McDonald’s shortly before her death. Witnesses reported hearing a loud scream of “help” moments before the video feed cut out.
The footage also showed Canty transitioning between the two fast-food locations and changing clothes. Initially, Canty claimed he was with Morrison to use drugs and denied going to the drive-thru. However, after seeing the video evidence, he acknowledged that it was possible but stated he couldn’t recall the details.
At the time of his arrest for Morrison’s murder, Canty was already in custody for failing to register as a sex offender. He now faces additional charges of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence.
