The Assam Rifles, a key paramilitary force in India, is working to incorporate local dog breeds into its operations. This initiative aligns with the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” campaign, promoting self-reliance. Recently, they added the Tangkhul Hui breed to their dog squad, and plans are underway to introduce the Kombai breed by April.
According to Lt. Col. Alok Palei, who leads the Assam Rifles Dog Training Centre, the move comes after guidance from the Union Home Ministry to enhance the use of indigenous breeds. Currently, the force has four breeds: Labrador, German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, and Tangkhul Hui. Six Tangkhul Hui dogs were introduced last year, proving their effectiveness in narcotics detection.
The Tangkhul Hui is native to the Ukhrul district of Manipur, known for its agility and disease resistance. The Kombai breed, from Tamil Nadu, is also set to join, starting with two males and eight females. The full induction of both breeds is expected by March 2027.
As of now, the Assam Rifles has 253 dogs, out of an authorized strength of 344. These dogs, stationed across the Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir, are supported by a dedicated team of over 1,200 trained handlers. Each dog requires a team of 9-10 individuals for their care.
The training program at the Dog Training Centre in Jorhat includes courses for both personnel and dogs. Currently, training focuses on obedience, first aid, and specialized skills like tracking and narcotics detection. Lt. Col. Palei noted a recent successful operation where a significant amount of narcotics was seized, showcasing the impact of their canine units.
Looking to the future, there are plans to expand the dogs’ roles in operations, including the possibility of training search and rescue dogs for natural disasters. As the force continues to evolve, the integration of local breeds not only supports national pride but also enhances operational effectiveness.
