Akron City Council Protects Healthcare Workers from Violence
In Akron, Ohio, the City Council has taken a bold step to safeguard healthcare workers. They’ve recently passed a new law that imposes jail time for anyone who harms these dedicated professionals while on duty.
Councilman Brad McKitrick introduced this important amendment to Akron’s menacing ordinance. It now considers violence against healthcare workers a first-degree misdemeanor, resulting in a mandatory three-day jail sentence.
During a recent meeting, healthcare staff from Summa Health shared alarming testimonials about rising violence. This year alone, Summa Health recorded 262 incidents of violence. Even more troubling is the increase to 359 incidents just a year later, reflecting a staggering 57% rise in workplace violence against healthcare workers.
Tracy Carter, Summa Health’s director of government relations, noted the shock and concern expressed by council members after hearing the stories and statistics. One particularly harrowing example involved a nurse who was attacked while pregnant.
Carter expressed gratitude that Akron is taking steps to protect those who serve the community every day. With around 9,000 healthcare workers employed by Summa Health in the area, this legislation aims to foster a safer atmosphere for them.
Councilman McKitrick hopes that the new law will deter potential offenders. He emphasized that the health professionals face enough challenges, especially amidst a national nursing shortage. The council had previously amended the menacing ordinance to include utility workers, another group facing violence on the job.
Mayor Shammas Malik supported this urgent initiative, which is already in effect. As communities across the nation grapple with healthcare worker safety, Akron stands out as a proactive example in addressing this pressing issue.
