Atlanta Falcons Elevate Ian Cunningham to General Manager: What This Means for the Team’s Future

ATLANTA – Ian Cunningham has been named the general manager of the Atlanta Falcons after a successful interview with team leadership, including owner Arthur M. Blank. Cunningham brings significant experience from his previous roles, including four seasons as assistant general manager with the Chicago Bears. His work contributed to the Bears winning the NFC North title in 2025.

Cunningham will report to the team’s president of football operations, Matt Ryan. Ryan expressed confidence in Cunningham, saying, “Ian’s vision aligns perfectly with what we want for the Falcons. His experience in building championship teams speaks volumes.”

During his time in Chicago, Cunningham helped acquire standout players who earned multiple Pro Bowl selections. In 2025, the Bears’ offense ranked sixth in the league—an impressive feat, considering most players were brought in during Cunningham’s tenure.

“It’s an honor to lead the Falcons,” said Cunningham. Growing up a fan of Atlanta sports, he expressed enthusiasm about reviving the city’s energy. With a strong connection to Ryan and head coach Kevin Stefanski, he’s eager to build a competitive team that fans will be excited about.

Before Chicago, Cunningham worked with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he was part of the team that won its first Super Bowl in 2017. Throughout his five years there, the Eagles made the playoffs four times and won the NFC East twice.

His journey began with the Baltimore Ravens in 2008, where he celebrated a Super Bowl victory in 2012. Over nine seasons, he gained valuable experience that shaped his career.

Cunningham’s background also includes an undrafted stint with the Kansas City Chiefs. He holds degrees in psychology and education from Virginia. Today, he lives in Atlanta with his wife, Justine, and their three children.

Cunningham’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the Falcons, as they look to turn the page on their recent struggles. According to a recent survey by ESPN, Falcons fans are eager for change, with over 70% expressing hope for the team’s future.

Arthur M. Blank praised Cunningham, noting his innovative approach and commitment to excellence. As the Falcons aim for a brighter future, Cunningham’s leadership will be essential in shaping the team’s identity moving forward.
