Multiple members of Washington state’s congressional delegation are sounding alarms about soaring health insurance premiums. If the enhanced premium tax credit isn’t extended, many people buying insurance from the state exchange could see their costs double.
In a recent analysis, Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, along with Congresswoman Suzan DelBene, highlighted these shocking increases. DelBene noted that many people will face double-digit hikes. Cantwell shared that nearly 1 in 30 individuals purchasing their own insurance will be affected, with San Juan County seeing the largest percentage of increases.
The looming government shutdown has added urgency to this issue, especially with open enrollment starting on November 1. Cantwell’s office reported that some customers could face a staggering 96% rise in their premiums.
Local resident Michael Bitz, coming out of an appointment at Providence Swedish Medical Center in Everett, expressed his frustration. “It’s always going up, and our wages aren’t,” he said, summing up a shared concern among many.
Republican Congressman Michael Baumgartner from Spokane is engaging with the public about the impacts of the shutdown. He emphasized that healthcare consumes a significant portion of the government budget, making it a vital topic, but he insists any discussions shouldn’t be tied to the budget crisis.
As the situation unfolds, citizens are left to ponder the balance between healthcare costs and wages. A recent survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation revealed that American households are increasingly worried about rising healthcare costs, with 69% saying they’re worried about paying their medical bills.
