Federal employees are getting another email asking them to report their recent achievements. This new request comes as part of a drive by President Trump and Elon Musk to evaluate the government workforce.

The emails, which began arriving late Friday, follow an initial message sent out a week earlier. In that first email, employees were asked to detail five tasks they accomplished the previous week. Musk, who is overseeing efforts to reduce the size of government agencies, warned that those who fail to respond risk termination. Many agencies advised their employees against replying, creating confusion about the directive.
The latest email might reach employees in a more direct way. It will be sent from specific agencies instead of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). This change is likely to make following up on noncompliance easier.
Some employees received the new email from the same OPM address, while others got it from their internal department addresses. The message instructed employees to reply with a summary of their weekly tasks and to copy their managers on the response. Going forward, this report will be expected every Monday by 11:59 p.m. Eastern time.
It remains to be seen how national security agencies will handle these requests. After the first email, they discouraged responses due to the classification of much of their work. The White House noted that less than half of federal employees replied to the initial request.
The message also included a note for those who only work on sensitive tasks, allowing them to state that their activities are classified. However, this might not resolve security worries since any email creates a digital trace.
During a recent cabinet meeting, Musk described the email request as a “pulse check” to see if government employees are engaged. He and Trump have both made remarks suggesting that some federal workers might be fictitious or nonexistent. Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with those who didn’t respond, implying that taxpayer money might be going to people who aren’t contributing.
Alongside these communications, the Education Department has offered employees a $25,000 buyout and warned of possible layoffs. An email from the department’s human capital officer urged employees to respond by the end of the upcoming Monday regarding the buyout, highlighting potential staff reductions.
