Attention Ford F-150 Owners: Nearly 1.3 Million Trucks Under Investigation for Possible Transmission Problems, Warns NHTSA

Federal safety regulators are looking into a concerning issue with Ford F-150 pickup trucks that affects around 1.3 million vehicles. Drivers have reported more than 100 complaints about a transmission problem where the truck unexpectedly shifts to a lower gear. This issue has been linked to a sudden decrease in speed, which can be risky for drivers and others on the road.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that they’ve received 138 complaints regarding F-150 models from 2015 to 2017. Drivers claim that this unrequested downshift can even cause the rear wheels to lock momentarily, potentially leading to crashes or injuries.

Ford is aware of the investigation and is collaborating with the NHTSA. Maria Buczkowski, a spokesperson for Ford, stated that they are providing support during this inquiry. Meanwhile, the NHTSA is conducting a preliminary evaluation to determine the gravity of the safety concerns. If necessary, this could lead to an official recall.

Interestingly, this investigation isn’t the only one affecting Ford recently. The company has also recalled nearly 50,000 other vehicles due to issues with backup cameras that were improperly repaired in earlier recalls. For models like the 2020-2023 Ford Explorers and the Lincoln Aviators, the camera video output can fail, leading to safety hazards.

Furthermore, Ford recalled around 13,000 Bronco Sports and Mavericks due to incorrect fixes that may affect the battery’s charging state detection. They also reported over 2,250 Edge vehicles experiencing similar problems with the rearview camera displaying faulty images.

Dealerships are required to update the software for these vehicles at no charge, and they will send out notifications to affected owners by April 24.

These developments reflect broader trends in vehicle safety, particularly as more manufacturers face scrutiny over their products. According to a recent survey by J.D. Power, around 25% of drivers reported experiencing issues with their vehicles during the past year. This underscores the ongoing challenges carmakers face in ensuring reliability and safety.
