One group of hackers, known as “ShinyHunters,” has been particularly aggressive. They even created a data leak site to pressure users into paying extortion demands. Google highlighted that these hackers often send phishing emails from domains like “shinycorp@tuta.com.”
Cybersecurity expert Jeremiah Fowler recently reported that around 184 million passwords were exposed in an open database, with many linked to popular email providers and social media. Following this, Google disclosed that a breach related to their corporate Salesforce servers exposed sensitive business information. This breach was linked to a notorious group called UNC6040, known for using voice phishing strategies to steal data and extort money.
In light of these risks, it’s crucial for users to enhance their account security with two-factor authentication (2FA) and to regularly update their passwords. Google advises against clicking emails that claim to alert users about suspicious sign-ins and instead recommends checking security alerts directly from their account settings.
Here’s how you can check your security activity on Google:
- Log into your Google account at myaccount.google.com.
- Go to the “Security” section on the left side of the screen.
- Look under “Recent security activity” to see any alerts from the last 28 days.
To change your Gmail password, follow these steps:
- Log into your Google account.
- Go to “Security.”
- Scroll to “How you sign in to Google.”
- Click “Password” and enter your current password to proceed.
Setting up 2-Step Verification adds an extra layer of security:
- Log in to your Google account.
- Navigate to “Security.”
- Find the “How you sign in to Google” section.
- Click “Turn on 2-Step Verification” and follow the prompts.
