A lot of game ideas never see the light of day. For fans of Jak and Daxter, it’s hard to ignore what could have been. Recently, it came to light that a remake of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy was pitched to Sony but ultimately rejected.
Let’s clarify: Sony wasn’t actively looking for a remake. This pitched idea was similar to how Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time came about, where the developer, Sanzaru, approached Sony and got to work on it. In 2019, Travis Howe, a former animator at Sanzaru, shared a sneak peek on LinkedIn. He showed a reworked scene from the first Jak and Daxter game. Even though the remake didn’t happen, Howe felt proud of his work, especially a scene where Daxter reacts dramatically.
Here’s what Travis said on Twitter about the pitch: “A while back, a team was assembled to pitch a remaster of Jak and Daxter. I was asked to animate a shot-for-shot remake to show what this updated version would look like.” Unfortunately, this idea did not gain momentum, as it was a fan-driven pitch rather than an official project commissioned by Sony.
Since 2009’s Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, fans have been left longing for a new adventure. That game was launched on PS2 and PSP, with High Impact Games taking over from the original developers, Naughty Dog. Naughty Dog has mentioned they briefly considered bringing back the series during the PS3 era but chose to focus on The Last of Us instead.
Despite the disappointment of the remake being shut down, it shows that some people still care about these PS2 classics. Not many franchises can boast such a nostalgic fanbase, proving that Jak and Daxter still holds a special place in gaming history.
In recent years, Sanzaru was acquired by Meta and shifted its focus to VR games but was closed down in January 2023. This leaves many wondering if the series will ever see a revival or a new adventure again. Only time will tell if Jak and Daxter finds its way back into the spotlight.
