Electronic benefit theft is becoming a real concern. In Oregon, the Department of Human Services is urging people to guard their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards from theft methods like skimming, cloning, and phishing.
Claire Seguin, the director of the ODHS Self-Sufficiency Programs, stressed that many families depend on EBT cards for food and cash assistance. “It’s crucial for everyone with an EBT card to take steps to protect their benefits,” she said.
Here are three easy ways to keep your EBT card safe:
- Freeze your card: When you’re not using your EBT card, freeze it for added security. You can unfreeze it whenever you need to shop. To do this, go to the ebtEDGE website or the ebtEDGE app and find “Freeze Card” in “Account Services.”
- Block out-of-state and online purchases: This can help prevent unauthorized use. Check the ebtEDGE website or the app to manage these settings under “Protect My Account.”
- Monitor your account: Regularly check your account for any unexpected charges. If you spot a transaction you didn’t make, report it right away. You can also cancel your card and call the replacement line at 855-328-6715.
Make sure to use only the ebtEDGE website and app for managing your benefits. Bookmark the ebtEDGE login page for quick access. Stay safe by avoiding other websites and apps.
Be cautious about scams, too. Only rely on information from official ODHS accounts. Never share your EBT card number or PIN via phone or text.
In case your benefits are stolen, act immediately:
- Cancel your card by calling 855-328-6715 on weekdays or 888-997-4447 on weekends. During the week, use the first number again to ask for a replacement card.
If you’ve had your benefits stolen, there are some options available. For Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits, you can request replacement. Unfortunately, SNAP benefits stolen after December 20, 2024, won’t be replaced.
