The Trump administration is making some changes to election security funding that have raised eyebrows. They’re considering cutting millions of dollars from a crucial grant program if states don’t follow new voting policies. This money, part of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) program, helps boost election security and support efforts to fight terrorism.
Currently, about $28 million—or 3%—of this funding is aimed at election security. While some experts say that while this amount is important, it’s not enough to radically change the security landscape for elections. However, the risk of losing out on this funding, alongside other recent cuts, is causing concern. Many are questioning if the administration genuinely prioritizes election security.
Larry Norden, an election expert from the Brennan Center for Justice, voiced this concern. He noted that states may find themselves facing yet another reduction in support if they resist new federal demands. After all, many states are unwilling to let a federal authority dictate how they manage their elections.
New rules were released in late July, and some states, like Maine, are declining the grant money altogether due to non-compliance with these requirements. Maine’s Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows, emphasized that the new rules feel like a method for the administration to gain control over state voting regulations, calling it “unacceptable.”
These new requirements are tough and include stipulations like the use of a recent DHS citizenship verification tool for all polling site workers. Concerns have also been raised about the reliability of this tool and its data security, especially since its functionality to check for U.S. citizenship was just added.
Interestingly, in previous years, parts of grant money meant for election security have not actually been used to strengthen voting infrastructure. This has led to worries that the remaining funds for law enforcement could be at risk if states don’t toe the line.
As society becomes more aware of these funding issues, it’s essential for states to remain proactive in maintaining election security. The evolving landscape of election policies reflects a tense dialogue between federal authority and state sovereignty in elections, emphasizing the ongoing national conversation about the integrity of our democratic processes.
