Austin Butler is reportedly in talks to take on the role of James “Sonny” Crockett in the upcoming reboot of “Miami Vice,” directed by Joseph Kosinski for Universal Pictures. If everything goes well, Butler will star alongside Michael B. Jordan, who is set to play Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs. This dynamic duo brings a fresh take on the iconic characters made famous by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in the original 1980s TV series.

Butler is riding a wave of success after his standout performance as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s film, which garnered him several awards, including a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. He started his journey on shows like “Zoey 101” and “Switched at Birth,” then made a splash on Broadway before breaking into film. His versatility shines through roles in projects like “Dune: Part Two” and Darren Aronofsky’s “Caught Stealing.”

Kosinski has a knack for reinvigorating familiar stories, as seen in his hits like “Top Gun: Maverick.” His vision for “Miami Vice” aims to capture the allure and grit of 1980s Miami, promising not just a remake, but a nostalgic journey inspired by the series’ pilot episode and its first season.

In fact, around 70% of viewers expressed interest in seeing fresh interpretations of classic stories.

“Miami Vice” is expected to start filming next year and is scheduled for release on August 6, 2027. This reboot aims to blend the glamour and corruption of its setting while staying true to the spirit of the original show. Universal Pictures has not yet commented on the project.
