Clarksville, TN – Recently, Austin Peay State University (APSU) students and staff took a week-long trip to Puerto Rico as part of their Alternative Break Trips program. This initiative allows students to engage in meaningful service while immersing themselves in a new culture.
The group worked closely with the Universidad de Puerto Rico Recinto de Cayey’s Ecology Center and Centro Esperanza, a nonprofit organization helping children and families in the Loíza area. At the Ecology Center, students participated in activities focused on ecological preservation. They maintained outdoor learning spaces and contributed to landscaping projects that enhance the center’s environment.
A student shared, “This was my first Alternative Break Trip, and it was unforgettable. I loved giving back while exploring such a beautiful place.” The trip allowed students to not just volunteer but also to experience Puerto Rico’s rich culture and natural beauty. They strolled through Old San Juan, hiked in El Yunque National Forest, and sampled local foods.
In today’s world, volunteering can make a big difference. A 2022 survey found that more than 70% of college students wanted to engage in community service to feel connected and impactful. Programs like APSU’s Alternative Break Trips empower students to take action, fostering a sense of social responsibility.
These experiences don’t just benefit the communities served; they also enrich the volunteers. Psychologist Dr. Laura Anderson notes, “Volunteering can boost mental health and well-being, as it often provides a sense of purpose.” Many students return with a renewed commitment to social issues and a deeper understanding of the world around them. Programs that mix service with cultural exploration like APSU’s play a vital role in shaping conscious, engaged citizens.
This emphasis on community and service is at the heart of APSU’s approach, facilitated by the Department of Community Engagement & Sustainability. The aim is to build empathy and social awareness among students, preparing them to make a positive impact in their communities.
