Climate negotiators from the Solomon Islands are getting ready for major talks in Brazil this year, thanks to training supported by Australia. This preparation is crucial as global climate discussions become more intense.

Leading the training was Dr. Ian Fry, an expert from the Australian National University with extensive experience in climate negotiations. He has previously served as Tuvalu’s Ambassador for Climate Change, bringing valuable insights into the unique challenges faced by Pacific nations.

Participants included members from the Ministry of Environment and local civil society organizations. Together, they set clear goals that align with the Solomon Islands’ national priorities for economic development and climate action.

The training also highlighted the importance of effective communication. Participants practiced drafting documents and interpreting key decision texts. A hands-on simulation helped them understand how to actively participate in discussions, ensuring they can represent their nation’s interests at the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21.

Australia’s High Commissioner to the Solomon Islands, Rod Hilton, emphasized the importance of Pacific voices in global climate discussions. He encouraged participants to use the skills gained during the training to confidently negotiate for their country.

Australia is not only helping with the training but is also supporting the Solomon Islands’ delegation at COP30 and establishing a dedicated space for Pacific-led stories and discussions at the Moana Pavilion. In addition, Australia is working on a joint bid to host COP31 next year, showcasing a united front in combating climate change in the region.

Interestingly, a recent survey indicated that over 70% of Pacific islanders are concerned about climate change, underscoring the urgency for active participation in global forums.
