Exciting news for fans of the beloved children’s character! Ayo Edebiri, known for her role in “The Bear,” is writing the screenplay for a new live-action “Barney” movie. She may also star in it.

This film is a collaboration between A24 and Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions, along with Mattel Films, the company that owns the “Barney” franchise. Kevin McKeon and Andrew Scannell will oversee the project for Mattel Films, while Robbie Brenner will produce it. Daniel Kaluuya and Rowan Riley are also on board as producers from 59% Productions.
Although Kaluuya is heavily involved in producing, sources indicate he will not appear in the film. Details about the plot remain under wraps, keeping fans guessing about what’s to come.
“Barney & Friends” first aired in 1988 and delighted children for 14 seasons before it ended in November 2010.
The project was initially announced in November 2019. Robbie Brenner expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Kaluuya, suggesting it would bring a fresh twist to “Barney” that audiences won’t expect.
Mattel has kept quiet about specific details since the announcement. However, in a recent interview, Josh Silverman, Mattel’s chief franchise officer, hinted that the movie will have a unique storyline, different from the animated reboot currently in the works. He emphasized the importance of staying true to the original spirit of “Barney” while also bringing a modern touch to the story.
Fans of Edebiri will also recognize her voice as Envy in Pixar’s “Inside Out 2”. She’s set to star alongside Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film “After the Hunt.”
This new “Barney” film promises to be an engaging blend of nostalgia and innovation. Stay tuned for more updates!
