Azerbaijan and Kenya are boosting their teamwork on environmental issues and urban planning after the recent United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi. This partnership aims to tackle pressing global challenges before the World Urban Forum 13 (WUF13) takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan, in May 2026.
Umaira Taghiyeva, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Environment, emphasized the country’s commitment to finding practical solutions for climate change, ecosystem protection, and renewable energy. “Our participation at UNEA-7 shows our belief in cooperative efforts that benefit both people and the planet,” she stated.
WUF13 will gather leaders, policymakers, and urban planners from around the globe to discuss sustainable urbanization under the theme “Housing the world: Safe and resilient cities and communities.” This topic aligns closely with national development goals in both Azerbaijan and Kenya.
Sultan Hajiyev, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Kenya, noted that hosting WUF13 and events like COP29 will highlight Azerbaijan’s growing influence in global environmental discussions. He pointed out that Azerbaijan looks forward to strengthening cooperation with Kenya, particularly in climate action and urban development.
Kenya plays a crucial role in global environmental diplomacy, hosting major organizations like UNEP and UN-Habitat. Officials from both countries see great potential for collaboration through knowledge sharing and joint projects.
As WUF13 approaches, Taghiyeva expressed optimism about continued partnerships with Kenya and others to ensure cities remain safe and inclusive. This forum is expected to draw thousands, further solidifying Azerbaijan’s role in global discussions on sustainable development.
Recent statistics show that the urban population is projected to reach 68% of the global population by 2050, emphasizing the need for resilient urban planning. Countries like Azerbaijan and Kenya, focusing on sustainability, are working to address these urgent needs.
