Baba Kalyani, the Chairman and MD of Bharat Forge, recently received the Indian of the Year 2025 award in the Business category at CNN-News18’s ceremony. He bested nominees like Albinder Dhindsa, Falguni Nayar, Rajesh Jejurikar, and Roshni Nadar Malhotra.
Kalyani was recognized for his significant role in boosting India’s “Make in India” efforts, especially in defense manufacturing. He shared that his journey had three key moments. One was his time in a military school, inspired by his grandmother’s stories of bravery. The second was the mentorship he received as he ventured into business. The most transformative was in December 2014, when private players were allowed into India’s defense sector. By 2024, Bharat Forge was exporting artillery guns to Europe—a remarkable achievement.
Under his leadership, Bharat Forge evolved from a well-known engineering firm to a leader in defense exports. His company has been instrumental in enhancing India’s self-reliance in defense production, shifting the balance from public sector dominance to a more inclusive private sector role.
This year’s award theme, “India’s Invincible Icons,” celebrates those who embody courage and innovation. Kalyani exemplifies these qualities, helping elevate India’s status on the global stage.
Recent statistics indicate a steady increase in India’s defense exports, climbing to nearly $1.5 billion in 2024—a 150% rise from previous years. This progress reflects a broader trend where countries like India are becoming key players in the global defense market.
In a time when self-reliance is a priority for many nations, Kalyani’s achievements not only advance business interests but also contribute to national security, emphasizing the importance of local manufacturing capabilities.
