ALBANY, Ga. – This year, hundreds of students in Dougherty County are returning to school equipped with essential health check-ups and vaccinations, thanks to a dedicated effort from the county’s health department.

On July 26, the Dougherty County Health Department (DCHD) hosted its annual back-to-school health fair. This event was an opportunity for families to receive crucial health screenings right before the start of the school year.

While there was a fee for some services, families could access important offerings, such as immunizations, vision tests, hearing tests, and dental check-ups. Attendees also went home with free school supplies, clear backpacks provided by local police, food, and vouchers for haircuts.

Brooke Stewart, the County Nurse Manager, expressed the importance of drawing families in. “We want to get them in the door to educate them about vaccines and hopefully get them vaccinated,” she said.

Health experts emphasize that keeping vaccinations up to date is vital for preventing the spread of communicable diseases. Many of these diseases are now rare, thanks to vaccines. “Vaccination recommendations vary by age, health history, and prior vaccines received,” explained Hope Kelley from the DCHD. “Understanding which vaccines your child needs can be complex. We encourage parents to ask us any questions they might have.”
