Bahrain Pledges Bold Climate Action: 30% Emissions Reduction by 2035 and Net Zero by 2060

Every year on February 4, Bahrain celebrates National Environment Day. This day highlights the country’s mission to maintain a clean and healthy environment. Under the guidance of Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Bahrain is becoming a leader in environmental initiatives.

One notable success is the National Water Strategy 2021–2030. This strategy aims to ensure clean water, a vital resource under UN Sustainable Development Goal 6. Bahrain has set ambitious targets: it aims to cut carbon emissions by 30% by 2035 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. A part of this initiative is the Bahrain Mangroves project, which has doubled the country’s mangrove area using sustainable methods. Mangroves play a crucial role in combating climate change and protecting biodiversity.

The government is also taking significant steps in waste management and wildlife conservation. Their efforts include proper disposal of hazardous waste, rehabilitating polluted lands, and protecting endangered marine species like dolphins and sea turtles.

Public awareness is another crucial aspect of Bahrain’s strategy. The kingdom launched a campaign titled “Sustainable Water – Every Drop Has a Story” in collaboration with the UN Environment Program, reaching communities nationwide. This campaign educates people about the importance of water in sustainable development.

Dr. Mohammad bin Dainah, Bahrain’s Minister of Oil and Environment, emphasizes that awareness is the first step to action. The public’s involvement is vital for protecting Bahrain’s unique ecosystems and heritage.
