Bakersfield Unites to Support Beloved Food Truck Owner After Significant Setback

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Mr. Dimples, a cherished food truck in Bakersfield, is facing tough times due to mechanical issues. Known for its delicious Korean corn dogs and creamy ice cream, this food truck has won over many fans since it started in 2021.

Owner Gilbert Juarez hit a significant bump in the road when his truck broke down again on July 30. This second breakdown was caused by a blown engine, leaving him in a tight spot. “It stalled me from being where I needed to be,” he explained.

The situation worsened when Juarez realized the costs for towing and repairs were more than he could handle. In a moment of desperation, he tried moving the truck without proper equipment and with an expired driver’s license, which only added to his problems. “A bad thing to do… I got a ticket, got both my vehicles impounded — and now my engine still needs fixing,” he said.

After sharing his struggles online, the community rallied to support him. Many people expressed concern over the truck’s fate and offered encouragement. To keep serving while he navigates these challenges, Juarez is temporarily using a rented trailer provided by The Pros Company. His focus has shifted to helping the homeless, finding joy in serving meals rather than stressing about profits. “We already have a lot of the appliances to put in the trailer… so hopefully, that will help lower costs,” he shared.

Melvin Lee, the owner of another local food truck, Simple Fries, has lent support, seeing Juarez as a brother in the business community. “He’s always tried to help others… anything I can do to help him out, I consider him one of my brothers,” Lee said.

Juarez estimates that it might take around $10,000 to fully recover his business and regain his truck. He encourages locals to follow his Instagram for updates on his services and whereabouts. Helping local businesses is crucial, especially in tough times.

Community support for small businesses like Mr. Dimples reflects a wider trend. According to a recent survey by the National Federation of Independent Business, 70% of consumers believe it’s important to shop local, especially during economic challenges. This sentiment is gaining traction on social media, where hashtags like #SupportLocal and #ShopSmall are trending.
