Bangladesh and Brazil: Partners in Climate Action and Trade

On September 7, 2025, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Bangladesh’s Environment and Water Resources Adviser, highlighted Brazil’s essential role as host of the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP30). She emphasized that Bangladesh is eager to collaborate with Brazil for effective climate solutions.

“We want to explore carbon markets to help protect the Sundarbans mangroves,” she stated. However, she stressed that these markets can’t replace real climate finance commitments. It’s crucial to ensure environmental protection and fairness in any agreements.

Hasan made her comments at a gathering in Dhaka hosted by the Brazilian Ambassador, Paulo Fernando Dias Feres. The event celebrated Brazil’s 203rd Independence Day and attracted diplomats, officials, and business leaders.

Bangladesh values its relationship with Brazil, noting that it is the largest trading partner in Latin America, with trade between the two countries reaching nearly $3 billion in 2024. Hasan called for better access for Bangladeshi garments made from Brazilian cotton. She also urged the removal of unfair tariffs on jute exports and smoother processes for pharmaceutical registrations. Recent certification of a Bangladeshi pharmaceutical company by Brazil is a promising development.

Hasan praised Brazil’s commitment to democracy, climate action, and fairness. Brazil was among the first countries to recognize Bangladesh in 1972, marking a long-standing partnership. She recalled the recent visit of Brazil’s Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, to Dhaka and highlighted Bangladesh’s presence at the G20 meeting on Women’s Empowerment in Brazil.

Looking ahead, Bangladesh is eager to learn from Brazil’s strengths in biofuels and sustainable agriculture. In return, Bangladesh can share its knowledge on disaster resilience. Hasan noted that both countries share strong people-to-people ties, particularly evident in the enthusiasm for Brazilian football in Bangladesh.

These collaborations aim to strengthen not just the political and economic ties but also enhance joint efforts in climate action, demonstrating a commitment to a sustainable future.
