Bangladesh has just rolled out its National Roadmap for Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems (MHEWS). This initiative aims to ensure that every citizen receives timely alerts about climate-related disasters.
The unveiling took place during the “National Early Warnings for All (EW4All) Roadmap Dissemination and Sharing Workshop,” hosted by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. Key partners included the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, and the World Food Programme (WFP).
This roadmap is part of the global “Early Warnings for All” campaign introduced by the UN Secretary-General in 2022. The goal is for everyone to have access to early warning systems by 2027.
Faruk E Azam, an adviser at the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, emphasized the nation’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable communities. “This roadmap represents our promise to minimize loss of life and protect our resources,” he said.
Kabir Md Ashraf Alam from the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society highlighted the urgent need to reach every person with critical information. He noted that their volunteers have been delivering essential messages across the country since 1972.
Swedish Ambassador Nicolas Weeks added that having early warnings is a fundamental right. “Preparedness saves lives and supports economic stability,” he stated.
The importance of technology in delivering accurate alerts was also underscored by BTRC Chairman Major General Md Emdad Ul Bari.
Around 140 senior officials attended the workshop, including representatives from various ministries and NGOs, along with delegates from the UN and development partners. The event featured lively discussions about the roadmap’s national implications.
Recent studies show that early warning systems can significantly reduce disaster-related fatalities. According to UN research, the implementation of such systems could save thousands of lives each year, especially in countries prone to climate-related events.
As Bangladesh moves forward, the commitment to enhancing disaster preparedness will play a crucial role in protecting its citizens and fostering resilience against future challenges.
