Mumbai: A Bangladeshi national was recently sentenced to seven months in jail for illegally entering India in 2005 and working in Kuwait with forged documents. The court took this case seriously, emphasizing that overlooking such actions can threaten national security.
The 46-year-old man, who used the alias Piklu Dey, was found guilty under the Immigration and Foreigners Act. According to the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, K S Zanwar, “A foreigner cannot claim the same rights as an Indian citizen.” The judge highlighted that leniency could harm both national security and the economic stability of the country.
This man had been in custody since his arrest on October 14, 2025, when he arrived at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport from Kuwait. Immigration officials became suspicious when they noticed that his passport listed only Bangladesh as his previous travel destination. When questioned, he struggled to provide clear answers, prompting further investigation.
Upon interrogation, he admitted his real name was Mohammad Iclaj Molla, from the Satkhira district of Bangladesh. He confessed to crossing into India illegally and residing in West Bengal. Over time, he managed to obtain forged identity documents, which led to him acquiring an Indian passport. With this passport, he moved to Kuwait on a work visa and lived there for a decade.
While at the airport, Molla contacted his family in Bangladesh, who sent him copies of their real identity documents, further solidifying the case against him. The court reviewed the evidence and ruled the prosecution’s case as proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
This incident raises questions about immigration policies and border security. According to a 2021 report by the National Crime Records Bureau, illegal immigration remains a significant issue in India. Around 2.5 million foreigners were estimated to be living in the country without proper documentation, often leading to criminal activities and security concerns.
In another case highlighting similar challenges, a 2022 survey found that 75% of respondents in border areas believed illegal immigration posed a serious threat to their communities.
As India navigates its complex immigration landscape, incidents like this serve as reminders of the ongoing issues and the need for robust policies. Such policy discussions often resonate on social media, where users express a mix of concern and support for stricter immigration laws.
The court has directed that Molla be deported back to Bangladesh after serving his time. While he has faced consequences, these cases underscore the ongoing struggle to balance humanitarian needs with national security.
