Barry Manilow recently shared an uplifting health update with his fans. Just weeks after announcing that doctors found a cancerous spot in his left lung, he posted a cheerful selfie on Instagram, stating he’s “Better Today!”
At 82, Manilow is taking a break from his performances to focus on healing. In December, he revealed he had been dealing with a lengthy bout of bronchitis. After performing again, his doctor advised an MRI, which led to the discovery of the lung spot. Luckily, it was caught early, and Manilow expressed gratitude for his proactive medical team.
“I’m thankful that my doctors were proactive and ran tests that typically wouldn’t be done,” he told PEOPLE. The good news is he won’t need chemotherapy or radiation; just surgery to remove the spot.
Friends and fans rallied around him. His backup singer, Melanie Taylor, shared her support, stating, “That’s my boss y’all!” Others, including his drummer, Matt Sorum, chimed in with messages of love and encouragement.
Despite his health scare, Manilow remains optimistic. In earlier interviews, he mentioned feeling “great” and having no symptoms. He joked that he would keep performing until he couldn’t sing his classic “Even Now” anymore.
This positivity reflects a growing trend among celebrities sharing health struggles publicly. A recent survey by the American Psychological Association found that 70% of people feel more connected to celebrities who share real-life challenges. It’s a reminder that even stars face tough times, helping fans feel less alone in their own struggles.
