The manager of Barzini’s on the Upper West Side was busy cleaning up after a troubling inspection. The restaurant had been ordered to close due to serious health violations found by state inspectors.
During the inspection, they discovered live and dead rats, moldy cheese, expired food, and several other unsanitary conditions. It was enough to make anyone’s stomach turn.
A judge previously ordered the restaurant to shut down and fix these issues by January 15, but just days later, customers were still seen inside. The manager claimed, “I didn’t have any customers inside. I have video of it.”
The problems came to light when concerned customers alerted City Council Member Gale Brewer, reporting that rats were a big issue. Brewer expressed frustration, stating, “The judge should have ordered a padlock.” She emphasized that the situation was unacceptable.
On the day of the inspection, workers were seen throwing out spoiled food, while a rat scurried around, seemingly still searching for a meal.
Some customers appeared unaware of the situation, while others were fully informed. One customer shared, “I have sympathy for the owners, but they have to keep it clean.”
Eyewitness News reached out for comments from the state and learned a hearing is scheduled for Friday. However, the manager told one customer he plans to reopen as soon as Tuesday.
