Wheeling, W.Va. – The Wheeling University Baseball team is off to a bumpy start this season, currently at 5-3. This weekend, they’re heading to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for a key series against Carolina University. After facing their first series loss, the Cardinals aim to bounce back and build momentum before Atlantic Regional play begins.
In their last outing, Wheeling played its home opener at GoMart Ballpark against Mansfield University. The team came out strong, scoring three runs in the first three innings. However, Mansfield fought back, eventually winning 10-5, leaving the Cardinals needing a doubleheader sweep to claim the series. They managed a thrilling extra-inning victory in the second game, winning with a walk-off hit by pitch. But they couldn’t carry that momentum into the final game, losing 6-2.
Luke Meyer has been a standout performer for the Cardinals. He had an impressive weekend, going 5 for 12 with a home run and two RBIs. His efforts have elevated his season batting average to .375, a solid number that places him among the team leaders in both RBIs and home runs.
On the pitching side, senior Sebastian Khan has been a consistent force. He pitched over 100 pitches, allowing only one earned run in 6.2 innings while striking out six. Khan leads the Mountain East Conference with 24 strikeouts and boasts a stellar ERA of 1.53.
Edward Mateo also shone in the recent games, recording three multi-hit performances and raising his season batting average to an impressive .484.
With non-conference play winding down, the Cardinals have a shot at making history. They began the season with a 4-1 record, the best start in the team’s history. If they perform well this weekend, they could improve on their previous best start of 7-3 from 2024.
Wheeling and Carolina University are set to face off for the second time in history, with Wheeling leading the all-time series 2-1. They previously met on March 6, 2023, where the Cardinals edged out a 7-6 victory.
As the Cardinals prepare for this crucial series, it’s clear they are motivated to gain back their previous momentum. With their sights set on a successful weekend, they’ll be looking to refine their offense and strengthen their pitching as they battle against Carolina University.
