Bashar Hanna Transitions from Commonwealth University to Lead PASSHE: What This Means for the Future

Dr. Bashar W. Hanna, the president of Commonwealth University, announced he will step down on July 31, 2025. He will take on a new role as vice chancellor for strategic initiatives for Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE).

In a message to the university community, Hanna expressed his gratitude for serving as its first president and highlighted his excitement for his next chapter in public higher education.

“This new opportunity is both humbling and exciting,” he said. “I look forward to applying what we’ve learned together at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield to a broader stage.”

PASSHE Chancellor Chris Fiorentino praised Hanna for his extensive experience. “We’re lucky to have someone like Dr. Hanna who can open new doors for students across Pennsylvania,” he noted.

During his time as president, Hanna oversaw the merging of three universities into Commonwealth University, making it the most affordable institution in the State System. His leadership boosted graduation rates, reduced equity gaps, and attracted record donations. The Bloomsburg University Foundation’s endowment nearly doubled to $90 million, and a successful campaign raised $88 million towards a $100 million goal.

Council of Trustees Chair John Wetzel commended Hanna’s dedication. “He took on the challenge of merging the three universities with distinction,” Wetzel said. “His focus on first-generation, Pell-eligible, and underrepresented students helped enhance access and retention.”

Reflecting on his journey, Hanna emphasized the collective efforts of students, faculty, and staff. “Being your president has been the greatest honor of my life,” he shared. “We’ve created a solid foundation for the future, and I can’t wait to see Commonwealth University thrive.”

Hanna is set to begin his new role with PASSHE on August 1, 2025. His leadership journey highlights important trends in higher education, such as increasing accessibility and fostering partnerships with the business community to better prepare students for the workforce. As more universities face challenges, Hanna’s approach could serve as a model for future leaders in education.
