Bashar Hanna Transitions from Commonwealth University to New Leadership Role at PASSHE

LOCK HAVEN — Dr. Bashar W. Hanna, the first president of Commonwealth University, announced he will step down on July 31, 2025, to take on a new role as vice chancellor for strategic initiatives at Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE).

Hanna expressed gratitude for his time at CU and excitement for his future. He noted that this new job will allow him to broaden the impact of the work done at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield. “It’s a chance to help shape the future of higher education in Pennsylvania,” he said, emphasizing innovation and student success.

PASSHE Chancellor Chris Fiorentino welcomed Hanna, highlighting his extensive experience. “He will help us create more opportunities for students across Pennsylvania,” Fiorentino stated.

During his tenure, Hanna successfully merged three universities into Commonwealth University, making it the most affordable option within the State System. He improved graduation rates and secured record support for the university’s philanthropic endeavors. Notably, the Bloomsburg University Foundation’s endowment nearly doubled to $90 million, and a goal of raising $100 million in a multi-year campaign is underway, with $88 million already secured.

John Wetzel, Chair of the Council of Trustees, praised Hanna for his leadership, particularly his dedication to first-generation and underrepresented students. He remarked on how Hanna’s focus on workforce alignment strengthened connections with local businesses.

Looking back, Hanna highlighted the tireless efforts of CU’s community—students, faculty, and staff. “Serving as your president has been a true honor,” he said. “Together, we have built a strong foundation for the future of Commonwealth University.” He will officially start at PASSHE on August 1, 2025.
