A new mini pantry has opened at Bay Community Health in West River, Maryland. This pantry allows local residents to access free food 24/7 without any paperwork or questions. The grand opening on Friday welcomed many community members and marked it as the 10th pantry in the Priority Partners Cupboards Project started in 2021, which promotes a “Take what you need, leave what you can” philosophy.
Dr. Erica Johnson, CEO of Bay Community Health, highlighted that health goes beyond just medical care. She noted the importance of nutritious food in maintaining good health, especially given the ongoing challenges of food insecurity.
The pantry operates on a simple idea: stock it with healthy food and let neighbors help each other without judgment. This friendly approach encourages community support. According to a recent survey, about 1 in 8 households in Anne Arundel County struggles with food insecurity, making such initiatives vital.
Kathy Pettway, a senior director of Priority Partners, mentioned that small acts of kindness can lead to significant change. Collaborating with local organizations is crucial to facing challenges like food insecurity. Community partnerships are key to making an impact.
The pantry is not just about food; it’s about building connections. Dr. Johnson emphasized that it symbolizes a unified effort among healthcare providers, government officials, and non-profits working together to improve lives.
County Executive Steuart Pittman also stressed the importance of this pantry, especially for rural areas in the county where poverty isn’t always visible. He pointed out that many families have lived in these areas for generations, and while the region may seem affluent due to its beautiful landscapes, many still rely on initiatives like this for their basic needs.
