South African sprinter Bayanda Walaza made a splash at the 2025 FISU World University Games in Bochum, Germany, bringing home three medals: gold in both the 100m and 200m, plus a silver in the men’s 4x100m relay.

Walaza, just 19 years old, had a chance for an extraordinary golden treble. However, a tricky baton exchange from teammate Mthi Mthimkulu set them back, letting the fast-paced team from the Republic of Korea take first place with a time of 38.50 seconds, while South Africa clocked in at 38.80 seconds. India secured third with 38.89 seconds.

He kicked off his event by winning the 100m race in 10.16 seconds, holding off a tough competitor, Thailand’s Puripol Boonson, who finished in 10.22 seconds. Walaza’s impressive performance mirrored his success at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships, where he also clinched the 200m title.

Looking ahead, Walaza is setting his sights on the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September. “I want to show that South Africa can produce sprinters beyond Akani Simbine,” he stated. His ambition is clear: he wants to shine internationally and earn recognition by the end of this year.

Walaza is determined to keep experienced sprinters alert. “My goal is to reach the finals and snag a medal,” he said confidently. He’s also eyeing the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics as a long-term goal, aiming to dominate the sprint scene for the next decade.
