BC Government Reports Stolen Social Insurance Numbers: What You Need to Know About the Interior Health Breach

On April 15, questions flew in the B.C. Legislature about a serious data breach involving Interior Health. Over 28,000 social insurance numbers belonging to their employees were reported stolen, sparking outrage among lawmakers. Bruce Banman, a Conservative MLA, expressed his frustrations quite bluntly, calling the situation a "gong-show."

In March 2024, Interior Health acknowledged the breach, revealing that they are reaching out to former employees who worked there between 2003 and 2009. These individuals might be affected because a recovered document from an RCMP investigation contained sensitive details like names, birthdays, social insurance numbers, home addresses, and phone numbers. Fortunately, no patient information was compromised.

Banman raised his voice against the provincial government, accusing them of failing to inform employees about the breach promptly. He highlighted that the stolen identities have already been exploited for fraud, including unauthorized tax refunds and loans. Health Minister Josie Osborne responded during the session, stating she learned about the breach for the first time in January. She assured that Interior Health, along with the RCMP and cybersecurity experts, is working hard to ensure that employees’ information hasn’t surfaced on the Dark Web.

Data breaches have become a growing concern. In 2023 alone, the Identity Theft Resource Center reported a 68% rise in data breaches compared to 2022. This alarming trend highlights the importance of proper data security protocols in both public and private sectors.
