It’s not every day that an NFL head-coaching interview catches everyone off guard, but that’s exactly what happened with the Chicago Bears.
According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, the Bears plan to interview Eddie George for their open head coach position this Sunday. George, a former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL star, was not previously mentioned as a candidate for any of the coaching vacancies.
Currently the head coach of the Tennessee State Tigers, George has a record of 24 wins and 22 losses over his four seasons. Despite this, he just finished a solid season, earning runner-up for the Eddie Robinson FCS Coach of the Year award. He led the Tigers to a 9-4 record, tying for their conference championship and securing a spot in the FCS playoffs for the second time since 1999.
George rose to fame as a player. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1995 while at Ohio State and was picked in the first round of the draft by the Houston Oilers. Over his career, he amassed over 10,000 rushing yards and enjoyed seven seasons with 1,000 or more rushing yards. He ended his playing career with the Dallas Cowboys. Remarkably, George had no coaching experience before being hired at Tennessee State in 2021.
The Chicago Bears have been searching for a new head coach since parting ways with Matt Eberflus after a disappointing 5-12 season. They have some talented players on the roster, including Caleb Williams, who is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
In their search, the Bears have considered several candidates, including Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and former Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy. Now, with George entering the mix, the Bears are keeping things interesting this offseason.
