Bears Snap Up Georgia Tech DL Jordan van den Berg with 213th Overall Pick: What This Means for Chicago!

Van den Berg has a strong athletic background, thanks to his family’s legacy. His grandfather, Francoise van den Berg, was a two-time finalist in Mr. Universe competitions back in the late 1960s, competing against icons like Arnold Schwarzenegger. On the other side, his grandmother, Joan Ricci, made waves in swimming by breaking numerous national records in South Africa.

Despite not getting an invitation to the NFL Combine, Van den Berg showcased his skills at Georgia Tech’s Pro Day. He bench pressed 225 pounds an impressive 35 times, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.9 seconds, and achieved a 36-inch vertical jump along with a 9-foot-11 broad jump. These stats highlight his exceptional athleticism.

When asked about his standout quality, he pointed to his explosiveness. “I pride myself on being strong at the point of attack,” he said, reflecting his drive to improve every day.

Joining the Chicago Bears is an exciting opportunity for him. He looks forward to learning from veteran defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, who served as a mentor during his college years. Van den Berg’s defensive line coach at Georgia Tech, Jess Simpson, also coached Jarrett when he played for the Atlanta Falcons.

“I can’t wait to learn from him,” Van den Berg shared. “Watching his teach tape inspired me, and I aspire to reach his level one day.”

The NFL landscape is evolving, with younger athletes entering the league with elite skills. According to recent data from the NFL, the average age of rookie players is decreasing, emphasizing the importance of talent development in college programs. With his foundation, Van den Berg is poised to make a significant impact.

This blend of heritage, personal grit, and a solid support system makes him a player to watch as he transitions into professional football.
