Behind the Scenes: 9 Unforgettable Moments the Cameras Missed at the Spirit Awards

Film Independent hosted its annual Spirit Awards on Santa Monica Beach, celebrating the best in independent film. The event was live-streamed on YouTube, and The Hollywood Reporter captured all the highlights from inside the iconic white tent.

Patti LuPone and Natasha Lyonne, both acclaimed New Yorkers, brought their lively energy to the awards. LuPone was nominated for her role in Agatha All Along, while Lyonne received the Robert Altman Prize for her work in His Three Daughters. Their presentation of the John Cassavetes Award was a standout moment, filled with humor and a playful announcement of renaming the award to honor Gena Rowlands. LuPone even sneakily glimpsed the winner before the big reveal. The award ultimately went to Girls Will Be Girls.

Jesse Eisenberg, another highlight of the day, accepted the best screenplay award for A Real Pain. He couldn’t help but praise Emma Stone, describing her as the “greatest in every genre.” He mentioned how every writer dreams of crafting a piece for her, humorously admitting that his future attempt might lead to an awkward conversation about her busy schedule.

The ceremony saw some stars making swift exits. Colman Domingo darted out early to get to the NAACP Image Awards after his nomination for Sing Sing. Similarly, Sebastian Stan arrived on the blue carpet just before the show started and left, dealing with a swarm of fans afterward.

Julio Torres had a blast on stage, where he presented the best editing award while adding some comedic flair with Aidy Bryant. His playful act with the teleprompter, which was working fine, had everyone laughing.

As the event stretched past lunchtime, guests were treated to delicious boxed lunches. These included grilled Tuscan chicken, hearty salads, and a variety of desserts. Fiji Water kept everyone hydrated throughout the day.

A touching tribute to Film Independent president Josh Welsh, who passed away in January, featured a sweet donut wall in his honor. Guests shared in this heartfelt moment, celebrating Welsh’s love for both the Spirit Awards and donuts.

Justice Smith brightly cheered for Nava Mau when she won for best supporting performance in Baby Reindeer. Their supportive spirits filled the room with energy.

Demi Moore also stole some smiles with her dog, Pilaf, who became quite the crowd-pleaser. During the festivities, video captured a sweet moment between Moore and fellow actress Mikey Madison, creating a lovely highlight of the evening.
