Filming the iconic 1995 movie “Leaving Las Vegas” was quite a ride for director Mike Figgis. In a recent chat with The Times of London, he shared a wild story about Nicolas Cage.
Cage went all-in for his role, even drinking a whole bottle of vodka before a key scene. Figgis expressed his frustration, saying, “I was furious. He was completely and utterly drunk.” Yet, in hindsight, Figgis appreciated the raw energy it brought to the film.
Their collaboration led Figgis to meet Cage’s uncle, the legendary director Francis Ford Coppola. They struck up a friendship that inspired Figgis’s upcoming film, “Megadoc.” This documentary focuses on Coppola’s long quest to create his ambitious film “Megalopolis.” Figgis believes Coppola faced roadblocks in expressing his creative vision.
Interestingly, Figgis mentioned that Coppola’s wife, Eleanor, gave him some valuable advice: “Keep your eyes open because he’ll change his mind all the time.” This insight reflects the often unpredictable nature of creative partnerships in Hollywood.
Coppola has faced criticism in the past, especially regarding his projects, but Figgis stood firm in defending him. He acknowledged that a successful low-budget documentary like “Megadoc” could stir jealousy. “Had I made a film I was passionate about, and then someone did a doc that became a hit, would I feel annoyed? Probably yes, privately,” he admitted.
