Belkin communicated this decision via an email and a statement on their website. They stated:

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to end technical support for older Wemo products. After this date, several Wemo products will no longer be controllable through the Wemo app, and features that require cloud connectivity will stop working.”

Customers with affected devices still under warranty after January 31 may qualify for a partial refund starting in February. The list of 27 devices affected includes products dating back to 2015 and as recent as November 2023.

This decision means that some existing features, like compatibility with Amazon Alexa, will be discontinued on certain devices. The Wemo app will also stop receiving updates, which are essential for tasks like connecting to Wi-Fi or using timers. This can pose security risks for users since updates often include crucial security patches.

For those who own affected devices, there is a glimmer of hope. If you set up these devices with Apple HomeKit before the deadline, you can still control them without relying on the Wemo app or Belkin’s cloud services. Interestingly, seven out of the 27 discontinued devices are compatible with HomeKit.

However, four Wemo devices will remain unaffected. These include the Wemo Smart Light Switch 3-Way, Wemo Smart Scene Controller, Wemo Smart Plug with Thread, and the Smart Video Doorbell Camera. The first three utilize the Thread protocol, ensuring they’ll continue to operate as usual.
