NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University women’s tennis team faced a tough match against Southeast Missouri State University, losing 5-2 at the Ensworth Tennis Center. Despite a strong showing in singles, the team couldn’t recover from losing the doubles point.
Belmont’s duo of Savannah Webster and Jessica Popiol won at No. 1 doubles, pulling off a 6-3 victory over Southeast Missouri’s Maja Bajorek and Mia Mayerova. However, the Redhawks clinched wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches, making it difficult for the Bruins to bounce back.
In singles, graduate Cielo Tapia-Cruz had an impressive match, winning 6-4, 6-1 against Kristina Kozakova. Webster also secured victory at the top singles position with a solid 6-3, 6-2 win against Bajorek. With the score tied at 2-2, the Redhawks took control, winning the fifth and sixth singles matches. Mayerova triumphed over freshman Ketevan Jeladze, 6-1, 7-6 (4), while Yontha Tadoum defeated senior Libbie Hamilton, 7-5, 6-1.
Popiol had a strong start, taking the first set against Sofia Zemtsova 6-2. However, she struggled in the second set, losing a tiebreak 7-2. Zemtsova then took the third set 6-1 for the final clinch.

Belmont will be back on the court Saturday at 12:30 p.m., hosting North Alabama at the Ensworth Tennis Center. Following that, the Bruins will visit crosstown rival Tennessee State the next Friday.
