Former UFC fighter Ben Askren recently shared an update about his health after undergoing a double lung transplant due to severe pneumonia. In a heartfelt Instagram video, he opened up about the challenging months he faced, mentioning he has little memory from late May to early July. Remarkably, he revealed that his heart stopped four times during his ordeal, lasting up to 20 seconds each time.
During this difficult time, Askren’s weight dropped to 147 pounds, the lightest he had been since he was a teenager. However, he now reports some positive news, stating he is regaining strength since the surgery.
The support from fans has had a huge impact on him. He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming love he received, saying, “It felt like I had my own funeral.” The encouragement from the wrestling community motivated him greatly.
Askren’s battle began when his wife revealed he was hospitalized on June 7 and was unable to respond. He was placed on a ventilator and began the evaluation for a lung transplant. He underwent the surgery at the end of June and has since been on the road to recovery.
Statistically, lung transplants can be life-changing. According to the American Lung Association, many patients see an improvement in quality of life post-transplant, with over 50% living more than five years afterward. This potential for a brighter future may be what fuels Askren’s spirit to push forward.
Askren, a two-time wrestling national champion, holds a record of 19-2 in professional MMA and won multiple championships across organizations before retiring in 2019. As he continues his recovery, many are eager to see what’s next for him. His journey underlines that even in the face of adversity, resilience and support can lead to remarkable recoveries.
