Ben Ogden made history at the Milan Cortina Olympics by winning a silver medal in the men’s cross-country skiing sprint. He’s now just the second U.S. man to earn an Olympic medal in cross-country skiing, marking a significant moment after a 50-year gap.
The last American man to achieve this was Bill Koch, who took home silver in the 50k classic at the Innsbruck 1976 Winter Games. Interestingly, Ogden grew up skiing in the Bill Koch Youth Ski League, where he learned from the very champion he now follows.
Ogden’s impressive performance included a time of three minutes and 40 seconds, showcasing his strong classic technique. Norwegian skier Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo won his seventh Olympic gold with a slightly faster time of three minutes and 39 seconds. Oskar Opstad Vike, also from Norway, snagged bronze in his first Olympic appearance.
From the beginning, Ogden stood out. He posted the second-fastest qualification time, displaying remarkable speed and skill. In the quarterfinals, Klaebo adopted an energy-efficient approach, while Ogden surged ahead to claim first place in his heat by pushing hard up the incline.
During the semifinals, Ogden initially led but was soon challenged by Finland’s Lauri Vuorinen. Their race ended in a thrilling photo finish, with Vuorinen narrowly ahead, but Ogden advanced to the finals as the fastest “lucky loser.”
This event was particularly significant for American cross-country skiing. According to recent stats from the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, participation in cross-country skiing has risen by nearly 35% in recent years, driven by rising interest and access to local ski programs.
Three American men competed in the sprint classic, but only Ogden reached the finals. JC Schoonmaker also participated but fell short after making a valiant effort in the semifinals.
