In a recent discussion, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman criticized the West Bengal government for not adopting the Ayushman Bharat scheme. She claimed that this decision has denied many poor residents, including migrant workers, access to much-needed free medical treatment.
The Ayushman Bharat scheme provides national portability, which means Bengal’s migrant workers could have received healthcare at any of the 32,000 hospitals across India. However, the state has opted out, limiting its residents’ options.
Sitharaman argued that staying outside of this national framework is holding back West Bengal’s healthcare potential. She mentioned that the state could have received approximately ₹785 crore, funds that could significantly improve local healthcare services. By rejecting this money, the state government is, in her view, hurting its poorest residents.
If West Bengal joined the Ayushman Bharat scheme, cities like Kolkata could have transformed into major medical hubs for eastern India, boosting both healthcare infrastructure and economic growth.
Interestingly, West Bengal is the only state that has not implemented the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Instead, it has launched its own initiative called Swasthya Sathi. This local program offers coverage but lacks the extensive benefits available through Ayushman Bharat, which has garnered attention across the country.
According to a survey by the National Health Authority, Ayushman Bharat has already benefited over 10 crore families nationwide, emphasizing the potential positive impact this scheme could have had in West Bengal. Social media trends show growing support for the scheme, with many citizens expressing frustration over the state’s decision. The discussion around healthcare accessibility continues to be a hot topic, showcasing the urgent need for improved policies that benefit all citizens.
As the healthcare landscape evolves, the choice to implement or reject schemes like Ayushman Bharat could shape the future of medical care in various regions.
